Who supplies U.S. torpedo acoustic arrays? Inside the Navy's production ramp

Published October 7, 2026 / MK 48 and MK 54 supply chain

The U.S. Navy says targeted supplier-improvement efforts have increased output across the torpedo industrial base, including significant gains in acoustic-array production.

MK 48 nose-array assembly increased from four to nine units per month, with a validated path to 12, while MK 54 acoustic-array assembly increased from eight to 13.

One array manufacturer across three torpedo families

Ultra Maritime, Braintree, Massachusetts

Ultra Maritime sits inside both production chains. Its Braintree operation manufactures the fully assembled acoustic nose array for the MK 48 Mod 7 and similar sections for the MK 54 Mod 0 and MK 58 Compact Rapid Attack Weapon.

Mimir's FY2021-FY2026 data identifies approximately $74 million in mapped first-tier subcontract awards to the Braintree operation under MK 48 awards: approximately $69 million through Lockheed Martin Sippican and $5.6 million through General Dynamics Mission Systems.

What must scale with array production

The visible supplier chain is not only about sonar electronics. Much of the mapped value sits in precision machining, tungsten components, acoustic isolation, electronics assembly and the manufacture and processing of the acoustic window and surrounding nose structure.

The Navy has already increased array output. Sustaining higher rates across MK 48 and MK 54 will depend on these lower-tier manufacturing capabilities scaling alongside the array integrator.
